Insurance for Contractors & Freelancers

Do I need Insurance as a Contractor?

The simple answer is yes. Like any other business, Contractors and Freelancers will need to take out insurance to protect their Company, their clients, any employees and the public.

The level of insurance and the type of insurance that is required usually depends on the client or agency and is often detailed in the paperwork.

The cost of business insurance is borne by the Company rather than the directors personally.

At Gorilla Accounting, we recommend that all of our Limited Company contractor clients have appropriate business insurance in place. It’s important that contractors safeguard both themselves and their companies. We’ve partnered with experts, Kingsbridge Contractor Insurance, to make it easy for you.

The Kingsbridge insurance policy is specifically tailored to meet the needs of professional contractors and freelancers. Please find a summary of the Kingsbridge package below;

Professional Indemnity

This covers you against claims involving accusations of professional negligence, making an error or omission, and giving bad advice which results in financial loss. It’ll provide cover for legal costs as well as any damages awarded against you.

Public Liability

This provides cover if someone is injured or property is damaged as a result of your actions. Whether you are working on your own premises or the premises of your client, you have a duty to protect anyone who might be affected by your activities.

Employers’ Liability

This provides protection against claims from employees. It is compulsory for almost all UK businesses. Regardless of your set-up, this is often insisted upon by clients who may require you to comply with a standardised contract.

In addition, there are also other insurance products available to Contractors including:

  • IR35 Tax Enquiry Insurance - This covers costs in the event of any HMRC enquiry into your business, including PAYE reviews, IR35, Section 660a.

  • Sickness Cover - This is beneficial if a contractor is unable to work due to illness.

  • Relevant Life Policy - This is a life insurance policy that can be provided as a tax-free benefit, so the Company can pay for this without any personal tax implications. For more information on Relevant Life Policies, visit our Contractors Guide to Relevant Life Policy page

Whatever cover you need, just let us know and we can introduce you to our preferred companies, who have been hand selected for customer service and competitive pricing. Call 0330 024 0406 or email info@gorillaaccounting.com to find out more.
