Manchester has been awarded a £10m prize to lead the market in the development of the Internet of Things (IOT).
The Government-led technology competition was won by the CityVerve Project to increase the use of more smart technology within cities. The projects plans include talkative bus stops, allowing bus operators to know when commuters are waiting, amongst other things.
Digital economy minister, Ed Vaizey commented:
“I’m delighted that the CityVerve Project is the winner of our Internet of Things Cities competition. The Project will bring real benefits to people who live and work across Manchester, one of our Northern Powerhouse cities,”

From 34 cities across the country, there were 22 entries and the winner, CityVerve project, which is led by Greater Manchester Local Enterprise Partnership. They were chosen due to their “ambition, scale, coordination across the public and private sector, and potential for success.”

The project, which includes partners such as Manchester City Council, Cisco UK, the University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University, MSP, BT, Kiltr and Future Everything, will concentrate on improving on 4 key areas. These will be healthcare, transport, energy & environment and culture & community.
