Life After Making Tax Digital: What ‘Normal’ Will Look Like in 2026

Minutes to read 4

From April 2026, Making Tax Digital for Income Tax will finally become a reality for some UK small businesses, changing what normal looks like in respect of their record-keeping and tax obligations.

Making Tax Digital (MTD) is one of the most significant changes to the UK tax system in decades, dramatically changing how taxpayers manage their obligations. MTD for VAT is already in effect and MTD for income Tax is the next stage of the phased rollout.

If you’re a sole trader or a landlord earning over £50,000 a year, you’re first in line and will need to be compliant with MTD for Income Tax from April 2026 (April 2027 for those earning over £30,000 and April 2028 for those earning over £20,000). The next steps of the rollout will be confirmed by HMRC in due course and eventually all non-PAYE taxpayers will be impacted.

What is The New Normal?

Once you have to comply with MTD for Income Tax, the traditional annual self-assessment tax return will be no more. Instead you’ll need to file quarterly updates with HMRC as well as an annual end of period statement and final declaration, all done digitally using HMRC-approved software. You’ll also need to keep all your records using the software.

Many sole traders and landlords prepare their records once a year usually close to the self-assessment filing deadline, but the quarterly updates mean that is no longer an option. This will be a big change from the traditional routine, but it brings various advantages in terms of how you manage your finances and tax affairs year-round.

The Benefits of Making Tax Digital

Although the transition to digital might seem daunting, the benefits of accounting software are significant both from a tax perspective and also in terms of the overall financial management of your business. MTD should be viewed as an opportunity rather than a threat or an inconvenience. Here’s why:

No More Tax Surprises

MTD for Income Tax requires a more proactive approach to managing your tax obligations. The quarterly updates ensure that you stay on top of things throughout the year which gives you a clear position of your tax position as you go. This means you’ll have an understanding of how much your liability will be and you can therefore plan ahead and set aside funds to cover it. Contrast that with the stress of leaving things to the last minute before finding out how much you owe!

Year-Round Financial Visibility

Another benefit of quarterly updates is having better year-round visibility of your financial position. Your transactions feed into your accounting software from your business bank account in real-time and you’ll soon get into the habit of scanning receipts as they’re incurred which is easily done with the app. Having a real-time picture of your financial position gives you clarity and avoids reactive management of your business finances.

Enhanced Accuracy

Doing things digitally takes manual entry and human error out of the equation. It removes guesswork and brings a level of accuracy that’s not achievable with spreadsheets or paper. Automated bank feeds, categorisation and reconciliation and digital receipt scanning remove uncertainty with the software doing the hard work, making human error and non-compliance a thing of the past. Errors and omissions can be costly, both financially and in terms of wasted time to rectify things, and MTD minimises that risk.

Less Filing Day Stress

Maintaining your records year-round avoids the filing day pile up that can be the source of significant stress. Under MTD you have to proactively maintain your records so it will never be a case of having to reconstruct your last 12 months’ transactions and sift through piles of papers and receipts at the end of January. This takes away the pressure and massively reduces the chances of errors and omissions.

Smooth, Simple Submissions

The accounting software does the work based on the information it receives throughout the year. Your quarterly returns, End of Period Statement and Final Declaration are prepared automatically so there’s no need for you to wrestle with spreadsheet formulas or paperwork. Just validate your numbers in the software, then you can file electronically with HMRC, as per MTD regulations, at the click of a button.

No More Piles of Paperwork

Digital record-keeping is a prerequisite of MTD. Bank transactions automatically feed into the software, invoices are usually managed in the software and supporting receipts, bills and other expenses are scanned and stored digitally. This means all your documentation is digitally stored, categorised and stored in a structured manner. This means they can be accessed instantly, nothing will be lost and it saves you drowning in documentation, saving time and reducing admin effort.

Better Compliance

MTD for Income Tax encourages a proactive approach to managing your taxes. By using digital records and software automation, your finances stay organised and accurate which reduces errors and makes it easier to meet HMRC requirements. This structured approach minimises the risk of fines, penalties and HMRC investigations, keeping your business compliant and stress-free.

Insightful Reporting and Forecasting

The benefits of accounting software go way beyond tax. It provides valuable insight through real-time reporting and forecasting. Automated reports track income, expenses, profit & loss and cash flow with forecasting tools projecting future trends. This turns your financial data into actionable insights and helps you to plan ahead with confidence. Customisable dashboards can display your key financial metrics at-a-glance meaning you always have an instant view of your financial picture which, with an accountant in your corner, is a powerful combination.
