Often contractors double up as commuters with the amount of travel they have to do on a weekly basis. That is, however, the nature of the work, if you aren’t mobile, then you are limiting the amount of work you can take on. Below are some simple, yet effective tips for maximising the experience without breaking the bank.

Accommodation

Naturally, the first thing that springs to mind is a hotel. If you book far enough in advance that isn’t a problem. There are a host of websites such as Lastminute.com and Booking.com that offer great deals right up to the day you leave. A lot depends on the contract length – hotels can prove pretty expensive over a prolonged period of time. A Bed & Breakfast is the next option and this is the most cost effective method on a short-medium term of stay. Start with a basic Google search and go from there, as these are often family owned, you can easily negotiate good rates. The final option is renting a place, this may seem extreme, but for long contracts this is pretty much the most cost effective method of living. Give it some thought.

What do I do in the evenings?

It is the perfect opportunity to master a hobby. May that be chess, tennis, singing, dancing, running, occupying your time constructively is key. Of course if you are close to home then weekends aren’t going to be a problem for you. It is those who are working in some pretty far reaching places who may find it difficult. There is only so much TV you can watch. Some people have taken up education while working away, at the Open University for example. It can be tough being away from your family and there is no substitute for it. But team sports for example are a great way to get involved with the local community and slow the boredom. Spending some time away from your “normal life” has helped many people gain a better perspective on life. Placing a value on those you hold dear is much easier when you aren’t with them on a daily basis.
